REVIEW: Sis - ‘Vibhuti’ Album

Vibhuti, the debut album from Sis (Jenny Gillespie Mason's recording project) is a deeply emotional and musically adventurous exploration of spiritual awakening. The album showcases Mason's artistic talent, blending her spiritual insights with a quest for diverse musical styles.

Inspired by the power of healing dreams, Mason created Vibhuti to express her own "vibhuti;" a Sanskrit term for ‘the divine spirit within.’ Drawing from personal stories of her life as a woman and mother, Mason crafted songs such as “Pregnant in Bhutan,” “Center of the Heart,” and “Splendor.” Each track reflects her deepening spirituality and constant musical exploration. Using instruments like the Afghan rubab, harmonium, and the Yamaha C-3 synth, Mason creatively blends a plethora of genres including new age, instrumental, synth-pop, jazz, and world music.

Mason worked with longtime collaborators Brijean on percussion, bass, and production. She also invited Will Miller on trumpet and Devendra Banhart on electric guitar for the album’s instrumental tracks including “Jugaspa” and “Cave of Plenty.” The result is an intimate dialogue between the artist, the divine, and the listener. The lead single, “Splendor,” highlights Sis' personal journey. With a sitar and intricate percussion, Mason's vocals weave through the spiritual production, building to a harmonious duet that encapsulates the album's theme.
