REVIEW: Ravive - “Las Vegas Makes Me Sick” Single

Described as an ethereal fusion of breathy pop and synthesized melancholia, Ravive’s newest single is reminiscent of the early 2010’s sad-girl tumblr era. Her sound is ethereal, yet dark and mysterious; definitely someone you don’t want to miss out on. While this is only her fourth single, Ravive has shown that she will do what she can to create a unique sound to share her life stories with us.

Written early in 2020, this song encompasses her experience with a predator that has tainted her feelings about Las Vegas. “Your exploitation left me jaded.” This song reminds us of a time when we were naive and excited to form new connections on the internet, but there are many times where the experience does not turn out as we expected. “Panic every hour / preying on the little girl who gave you all your power” The lyrics are melancholy, you can feel the unease she feels with the city and the man who took advantage of her so young. Accompanied by a slow, hard hitting beat, this song gives listeners a nostalgic feeling of sadness.

Every single so far, has been released with a letter to give some backstory to listeners. At a young age, she met an older guy online who manipulated her into a relationship. She talks about how he had a hold on her for years and over time she’s healed, but sometimes it still gets to her head. After visiting Las Vegas in 2017, she had this eerie feeling of paranoia and couldn’t really enjoy the trip fully. Every time she turned her head, ‘would he be there?’ she thought. As someone who’s grown up during the rise in popularity of the internet, I’m sure many of us can relate to creating relationships with people online who may have not been the best for us. Now that we’re older, we’re not as naive, but it stays with us nonetheless.
