REVIEW: Earl Sweatshirt - “2010” Single

Chicago born rapper Earl Sweatshirt recently released his single titled “2010” along with a music video from Ryosuke Tanzawa. The song accompanied by a hypnotic beat produced by Black Noi$e is his first solo release since “Whole World” off of the 2019 deluxe EP and it is just as thought provoking as all of his other work. The synth and drums in the song work well together and almost seem to go backwards while his lyrics move forward. Sweatshirt takes his fans through his journey from the start; the song title giving a nod to his second mixtape self-titled Earl which was released in 2010.

His lyrics are effective and his tone is calm, but he is still just as meaningful as usual. “Long way to go / We already came far” Sweatshirt voices in the track. Highlighting his evolution as an artist and how much he’s progressed over the years. He started out small before joining Odd Future and eventually moved on to expand his own career, keeping a similar vibe throughout many of his projects. “Made it by the teeth of my skin / thank God”, “Threw me loose change / look at what I made of it” His lyrics point out his struggle starting out and emphasize his success the past few years.

The video itself is pretty laid-back, it features Sweatshirt rapping to the camera which perfectly accompanies the chill nature of the lyrics complimented by Black Noi$e’s captivating beat. You can watch the music video directed by Ryosuke Tanzawa above. If you get a chance, check out his new single hopefully being followed by an album.
