REVIEW: Dream Nails - “They/Them” Single

Full of bright colors & great ferocity, UK punk outfit Dream Nails remind us the importance of respecting others’ gender identities, including gender non-conforming folks, in their addicting new single “They/Them.” This self-proclaimed “rage-fueled love letter to non-binary people” track is also lending itself & its cover art to be donated to a grassroots LGBTQ+ charity, The OutHouse, based in the lead singer’s hometown in Colchester, UK.

“They/Them” is structured as a classic punk track; a chant-like chorus inciting crowd participation & a somber bridge building back up to that sonic rage. The facetious taunt, “call me a girl again,” cleverly sets up each following line with friendly reminders of how to respect people like: “my gender’s not your business.” The repetitiveness of these lines are not just for the purpose of being catchy, but to drill into the antagonist’s head that knowingly misgendering is harmful while also portraying the protagonist’s annoyance with constantly having to repeat themselves.

If you need an irresistible rock beat to remind you to use the correct pronouns or simply just enjoy some quality music, then you’ve found your track. We also highly recommend checking out their debut self-titled album from last year if you crave more audacious intersectional feminist punk hits… & we know you do. [LISTEN]
