REVIEW: Pollyanna - “Monster” Single

Newly-signed I Surrender Records’ punky-pop quartet Pollyanna recently released a vulnerable acoustic single, “Monster,” leading up to the release of their full album Sugar Coat Deluxe due on November 5th. [Pre-order here] The 6-track Sugar Coat EP released last year received a great deal of praise, so it’s no wonder they’re continuing this era with even more fresh tracks.

“Monster” takes a step back from the grungy guitar riffs for a moment to strip down to a coffeehouse-style ensemble showcasing the raw vocals of Jill Beckett. Pollyanna says the single’s premise is “acknowledging & accepting being a person who can’t change their ways. Someone who knows they aren’t treating someone fairly because of selfish reasons and that the other person should leave before they get hurt. In a way, it’s trying to explain to someone that they won’t be able to change & fix the bad parts of them.” The protagonist’s pain is visceral with straining lyrics that portray themselves as this “monster.”

Pollyanna are constantly producing innovative sounds & concepts that it’s impossible not to be captivated by their journey. Make sure you’re following along because it’s just the beginning. Winter tour dates are below!
