Yijia Shines Bright With Newest Release, “Yi The Sun”
With “Yi The Sun,” London-based singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Yijia delivers a spellbinding fusion of ancient tradition and futuristic sound. The track offers a first glimpse into her forthcoming album TU, a project that connects Chinese musical heritage with modern composition, storytelling and electronic production.
Blending ambient psychedelic trance with the haunting voices of the Yi ethnic minority from Southwestern China, “Yi The Sun” becomes both an inventive genre experiment and a personal reclamation. Yijia first heard the Yi sound through a rare field recording sent by a musician friend, feeling an immediate pull to its otherworldly tone. Months later, a DNA test revealed she has Yi ancestry, a discovery that transformed the song into a symbolic homecoming.
Lyrically, “Yi The Sun” imagines a return to Earth after centuries away: “Hey, hello, is anyone home? I’ve been gone for too long.” It pulses with dancefloor energy while carrying the weight of memory, identity and longing. Yijia calls it “taking my ancestors clubbing”
Yijia’s path from teenage pop star in China to an artist deeply rooted in traditional folk has been shaped by a search for cultural connection. Her upcoming album TU, set for release on the 22nd of August, is a broad range of reimagined folk songs from Mongolia, China and Tuvan traditions alongside award-winning original works. At its core is the guzheng, the ancient Chinese zither whose shimmering tones link the past to the present.
With ethereal vocals, intricate production and a powerful backstory, “Yi The Sun” invites listeners into a space where ancestral voices and futuristic visions move together in harmony.
