We haven’t had our “Fill” of Gnat

Indie singer-songwriter Gnat released their anticipated return to solo music with the new single “Fill” out March 28. The track explores the universal themes of coping with heartbreak from a uniquely intimate and raw perspective. The punchy lyricism and haunting harmonies immediately hypnotize the listener, with the ethereally sung opening line, “Muscle memory demands I feel your absence,” forming the visceral crux of the track.

Gnat masterfully connects the restraint needed to leave behind a relationship to managing hunger. The track is riddled with apt analogies that articulate the juxtaposition of having those cravings and still feeling too sick to eat. Lyrics like “I’ve been nauseous all day” and “Can’t remember what it’s like to clean my plate” paint vivid pictures of discomfort and relatability. Gnat refuses to conform to the notion that pain is too subjective and difficult to describe.

“I remember feeling like there was this hole in my life, like I had unknowingly made room for this person in every corner of my mind and body. And when they were gone, there was all this negative space I didn’t know how to handle. Hunger felt like the truest analogy for that sort of visceral, unrelenting feeling,” shared Gnat in a press release.

It is clear that Gnat has a deep commitment to storytelling, with the layered and dissonant harmonies paralleling the achiness of her lyrics. They have complete control over their sound by writing, producing, composing, and performing each element. Gnat revealed that they also improvised the harmonies in the studio, enhancing the honest and all-consuming aspects of the track. Their attention to detail enabled them to execute an emotionally charged song that matches its sound to the lyrics. Stay tuned, as Gnat’s debut solo album is set to release this spring.
