REVIEW: Underoath - ‘Voyeurist’ Album

In early 2022, Underoath, an American metal band from Tampa, Florida, released their ninth studio album titled, Voyeurist. The current incarnation of the band is the most familiar, with Spencer Chamberlain on vocals. Underoath's current lineup is made up of Gillespie on drums and clean vocals, keyboardist Christopher Dudley, lead guitarist Timothy McTague, bassist Grant Brandell, lead vocalist Spencer Chamberlain, and rhythm guitarist James Smith. The band is coming off a Grammy nomination for Best Metal Performance for "On My Teeth", which is off of the album Erase Me. At one time, UnderOath identified as a Christian band but has distanced itself from that label over the years. Yes folks, this album contains ‘Parental Advisory’ as it does contain explicit lyrics!

Voyeurist is a hard-hitting album from start to finish and leaves your face sore and wanting more! I've never been an in-depth Underoath listener, I've heard them on satellite radio but never added them to a playlist. These ten songs fit together nicely too, taking listeners on a high octane ride. The album has spawned 3 singles to date: "Hallelujah," "Numb," and "Cycle (featuring Ghostemane).” All decent songs, but the one I really enjoyed was "We're All Gonna Die." Maybe it's society or the winter blues but I feel and identify with the pessimism of the song. Voyeurist shows why the band Underoath has survived many band member changes and been around to release nine studio albums, more than more bands can say.

If Underoath is your cup of tea or even if you're just a metalhead, such as myself, give the album a listen, I recommend it! Thank you so much for stopping by and reading my first (of many to come) music reviews! Don't forget to check out the other amazing articles on Noisescape.
