REVIEW: Stella Donnelly - “Flood” Single

Australian singer-songwriter, Stella Donnelly, recently announced that her Sophomore album, Flood, will be released on August 26th. With such a big announcement, came the rest of the dates for her extensive world tour & her second single / album title track, “Flood.” Needless to say, we needed to dive right in.

“Flood” pairs delightfully with its predecessor, “Lungs,” as it bodes well as another light & airy groove while still feeling completely separate. While it provides the aural illusion of a field-prancing number, Donnelly recites some profound reflection in the chorus: “I’m taken out to sea in the flood / Swimmer looking for the line / Maybe you’re my warning call / Waiting for the hand to arrive.” Donnelly seems to revisit those memories & reframe them as a lesson learned. Her impending record, Flood, sounds like it will follow a similar formula around growth & self-discovery. As she found herself reconnecting with nature, she explained, “I was able to lose that feeling of anyone’s reaction to me. I forgot who I was as a musician, which was a humbling experience of just being; being my small self.”

With Donnelly’s latest releases & the anticipation of the whole project being crafted through experimentation & self-actualization, it’s inevitable that the new album will be a journey for all listeners. It’s also definitely worth mentioning the light-hearted home-video styled music video for the single, “Flood.” Its wholesome & quirky charades all lead up to an attempt to remake another artist’s music video… a certain viral music video from 2009… involving treadmills. (We highly recommend watching even if you figured out what we’re referring to.)
