REVIEW: Ruti - “Break My Own Heart” Single

Enchanting UK singer-songwriter, Ruti, has made a grand return with their latest single, “Break My Own Heart.” Their EP, Lungs, released back in May, was a true testament to the rising artist’s range & vision— garnering a plethora of new listeners as a result. “Break My Own Heart” is just as compelling sonically as it is lyrically.

The goosebumps-inducing vocals of Ruti meticulously intertwine with the atmospheric synthesizers & bass lines in this track. The first pre-chorus builds into what’s expected to be a triumphant crescendo, but instead leads us back into a heightened version of the steady R&B rhythm with the following verse, making the grand finale even more grand. Ruti’s backing vocals were not only an integral component in enhancing their own majestic voice, but were also utilized to create another layer to the multifaceted instrumentation. This is a track where music lovers will discover a new element to appreciate with every listen.

Lyrically, “Break My Own Heart” shares the frustration of overthinking to a fault. The chorus recites, “Assume its all over / Before I get to the start / Self sabotage.” A familiar feeling to many, where the tendency to self-sabotage as a default defense mechanism presents itself in any significant event.

Ruti shares, “It’s a conversation with myself. Giving myself grace but also confronting myself about my tendencies to think too far in the future and not live in the present. I'm the kind of person that just gets either too excited or too anxious about things that haven’t even happened and it leads to me spiraling. It can lead to disappointment but most importantly it takes me out of the moment.”
