REVIEW: Alfreda - “Frankie” Single

Britain’s rising singer Alfreda is back with a new single titled “Frankie.” The track is a blend of alt-pop balladry and vintage 70s disco, living up to her status as a ones to watch artist in the art-pop scene. With each release, Alfreda has proven her ability to shapeshift musically while maintaining a core essence and “Frankie” is no exception. It offers a narrative rooted in lust, obsession, and mistaken identity - a tale of someone falling hard for another only to be met with a careless misstep.

With honeyed vocals that glide through a lush composition, Alfreda harks back to a bygone era while embracing modern influences.  The track is nostalgic yet modern, embodying the best of both worlds with old Hollywood glamour wrapped in contemporary production.

Lyrically, “Frankie” is about falling hard for someone only to be met with a careless mistake: being called by the wrong name. This subtle but stinging moment of identity confusion serves as a springboard for Alfreda to dive deeper into themes of desire and transformation. “No, Frankie’s not my name,” she sings, blending sweetness with sarcasm.

The lyrics cleverly capture the tension as Alfreda muses about slipping into the role of ‘Frankie’, a carefree alter ego designed to fit her lover's ideal. “Call me babe, whatever works for you / I can be darling, I can be mommy too,” she continues, revealing the persona she adopts to please someone who’s barely scratched the surface of who she really is.

Alfreda’s songwriting and cinematic flair reach new heights in “Frankie”— a track about the compromises we make in love, the personas we adopt, and the emotional toll of surrendering too much of ourselves. As the final single on her upcoming Mother’s Makeup EP, “Frankie” ties together the EP’s themes with wit, honesty, and undeniable charm.
