REVIEW: Mieu - “New Spells” Single

The identity behind Mieu is made up LA-based artists, Shelley Zhao & Chris James. They’ve seemed to have mastered the ethereal soundscape of 90s shoe-gaze & hazy pop in their debut EP, Her Light. Their lead single, “New Spells,” is a prime example of their ability to blend several musical influences into one coherent, dreamlike melody.

Their recent music video for the single, “New Spells,” captures a comforting DIY performance of the two in a Los Angeles kodō hotel room. Ironically enough, the word ‘kodō’ in Japanese translates to ‘heartbeat,’ which only enhances the tone of romance in the lyrics.

Zhao found herself transformed into a new person & artist once moving to the Los Angeles area, thus birthing the inspiration behind the new project of Her Light with Chris James’ collaboration. “After ten years of playing underground venues in Brooklyn, moving to LA was kind of surreal. The atmosphere is so different and I was becoming someone new,” she says. You can listen to the full project now!
