REVIEW: Emei - “Backtrack” Single

Alt-pop solo artist, Emei, is back with another hard-hitting track: “Backtrack.” Emei has accumulated a sizable amount of online attention this year through TikTok & Instagram promotion, so it is only natural that the reception to each new release has been notably enthusiastic. “Backtrack” is no different, as it incorporates her addicting electric guitar signature but turns it up a notch.

“Backtrack” is one of those songs you immediately yearn to hear performed live. And Emei incidentally kept that performative element in mind when creating this single as it heavily features live drums & guitars.

“Back back track
Now you feel bad
Too far gone
To try to take it all back
Turn your words to ice on my bruise
Can’t pull a punch you already threw.”

A situation we’re likely all familiar with, where someone tries to take back something hurtful they’ve said to you. Emei takes that narrative & visually compares it to being matched in a boxing ring where your actions have immediate physical consequences. Although there is a stark tone of verbal abuse, Emei still manages to make the track upbeat & empowering. This kind of juxtaposition in music can often help listeners cope easier because of its lighthearted nature. Being so, “Backtrack” was a beautifully bold way to end Emei’s year.
