INTERVIEW: The Numb Project

The Numb Project, helmed by Portland's own Chris Calarco, effortlessly blends lofi, hip-hop, and cinematic elements to craft an introspective yet expansive soundscape. His latest release, Transmissions from a Troubled Radio, features the standout track “Sad Eyes.” It’s a track that epitomizes the album's emotional and technical richness. Influenced by hip-hop luminary Pete Rock, Calarco's use of Ableton Live and a Push 2 shapes a textured musical narrative, marked by a poignant minor chord progression and rhythmic clarity.

”Sad Eyes” is more than a song— it's a story woven into the fabric of rhythm and sound, reflecting a journey of longing and introspection. The Numb Project's ability to capture such raw human emotions sets him apart from others, ensuring that “Sad Eyes” and the entire album resonate deeply with listeners. Transmissions from a Troubled Radio stands as a testament to Calarco's evolving artistry, marking a significant point in The Numb Project's discography. Keep reading to hear more about the album from Chris Calarco himself.

Can you please tell us about the inspiration for the album’s standout track “Sad Eyes?”

“Sad Eyes” came from me wanting to combine the lofi and boom bap iterations of hip-hop. I wanted cracking drums, a dreamy atmosphere, and melancholy emotion. Even though the song doesn’t sound like Boards of Canada, their textural feeling was an inspiration.

For those who may not be familiar yet, how would you describe your style/sound?

The Numb Project is fundamentally based in downtempo electronica. I combine elements of trip-hop, dub, boom-bap, idm, and ambient to create abstract hip-hop grooves that live inside warm atmosphere and include groove-forward, rhythmic detail.

What was your favorite part about making “Sad Eyes?”

How easy it came together. It was the most efficiently produced track on all of Transmissions from a Troubled Radio. It was blessed from the start!

What's one piece of advice you learned as an artist?

Make music every day. Even if it’s just for a short period of time. If you miss one day, don’t miss two.

Any upcoming projects or shows fans can look forward to?

I am preparing several new songs for release within the next month. You can expect several new singles this summer, a few remixes from my latest record and a new EP this fall!
