INTERVIEW: Lisa Ramey

After a successful run on The Voice in 2019, Lisa Ramey won the hearts of viewers all across the nation. Ready to return even stronger than before, the vocal powerhouse has just released her newest EP, Foretaste. The EP is a melting pot of genres that moves and inspires listeners through a story of self-empowerment, vulnerability, and letting go of baggage.

A seamless blend of R&B, pop, punk, gospel, and funk, Foretaste is a six song-saga (produced by Joe Kapo Kent) that dives deeper into Ramey’s experiences with friendships, love, freedom, and more. The EP showcases her authenticity and versatility as an artist as well as demonstrates the growth she’s had both as an artist and through her personal life. For those who may just be getting introduced to you and the genre, how would you describe your sound and what makes it uniquely yours?

I write music that feels good to me. My genre of music grabs different genres and puts them together in each record. I feel that this way of writing is limitless and keeps me out of the genre box. I write how I feel and how I hear music.

What was the inspiration behind Foretaste?

I wanted to give a sample or a taste of what's to come when I release my full length album. A little bit of everything and a whole lot of my authentic self.

Can you please tell us about the EP’s creative process?

I think it's extremely important to have a producer whose only job is to help push the artist's music and not try and change how the artist writes in any way. When I found my producer, Joe Capo Kent, he gave me the freedom to write whatever I wanted. Foretaste is authentically me. It was time to party and release all my ideas. A celebration of freedom in writing.

Do you have a lyric or song from the EP that most resonates with you? If so, what is it and why?

So many! "How did we get here..." is the opening line to my song “Hopeless.” Every time I sing that line it puts me right back in that moment of being in yet another relationship that probably didn't need to happen. How did I do this again? It was that relationship that taught me I was the problem and needed to fix myself before I ended up in the same toxic relationship again. No losses just lessons.

Were there any challenges that came about during the making of Foretaste?

I'm happy to report it was an incredible process. When you have a team of people who love to stay in their lanes and allow me to lead, it's amazing how effortless the process can be.

Are there any takeaways or messages you want to convey to fans through this release?

Freedom. Freedom in creating, writing, and releasing what I want without anyone delaying my process. In this business, it is beyond difficult to have your own voice. I found mine and I found ways to stay true to who I am. It can happen.

Are there any upcoming shows or other projects fans can expect from you this year?

I am planning my touring schedule now. Check my social media and my website and stay tuned!
