DORRR Turns Inward on the Quiet Strength of ‘Ganbaru’
As the former frontwoman of The Blind Suns, DORRR built a reputation for energetic, reverb-drenched indie rock that travelled well beyond France. But under the name DORRR, she has been creating a different space: quieter, darker and much more introspective.
Her new EP, Ganbaru, takes its name from the Japanese concept of persevering through difficulty, and that spirit runs through the entire record. The songs drift through melancholy, solitude and emotional endurance, carried by a voice that feels both fragile and determined. It’s the sound of someone standing their ground in the middle of an emotional storm, even if they’re not entirely sure where the clouds will clear.
“Lonely Sun” is the emotional centre of the EP. Framed around the image of the sun as something both essential and profoundly alone, the track addresses the invisible weight often carried by women within communities. DORRR’s voice sits right at the front of the mix, intimate enough to feel almost confessional. The EP also features a remix from Leeds duo Scenius, who push the track further into dark pop territory.
Elsewhere, Ganbaru moves between introspection and subtle release. “What’s Going On” leans into a warmer palette, with a chorus that nods to classic pop while keeping the EP’s underlying melancholy intact. “I Might Be Weird” plays like a gentle manifesto for embracing difference. Built on a slow-burning groove, “Low & Slow” captures the kind of restless creative energy that pushes an artist to follow instinct rather than rules.
The EP also includes a cover of “Black Balloon,” originally by The Kills. DORRR treats it less like a straight cover and more like a reinterpretation, as she’s saying goodbye to a darker part of yourself.
In stepping away from the surf-rock rush of The Blind Suns, DORRR hasn’t lost intensity. She’s simply learned how to channel it inward. Ganbaru draws you in and by the time it ends, you realise its quiet strength is exactly the point.
