Only four days after the release of their fourth album, Weirdthrob, singer-songwriter mehro took the stage at White Oak Music Hall for an electric performance. Many fans in attendance saw mehro earlier this year when they opened for half•alive, stating that they were blown away by their performance and looked into them after they got home. This goes to show the importance of openers and the power of platforming new artists.
Mehro had two openers: Australian indie pop singer, Evie Irie and Canadian country singer, Charlie Barstow. Despite not having any officially released music as of yet, Charlie made the most of his time on stage, playing five songs that had audience members eager to hear more from him in the future. Once his set was over, fans could be overheard asking for his instagram account to keep up with his future endeavors. Similarly, Evie instantly charmed the audience. Despite many people in the crowd only barely discovering her, they could all be seen trying to sing along to every song. During a particularly fun moment, Evie started a call and response that even the bartender went along with.
From the moment the lights dimmed and the stage lights started having a performance of their own, fans knew they were in for something special. Immediately, the audience was hit with two back to back performances of songs from the new album, “Sepia Tones” and “Plastic Tires.” The intimate venue made it feel like mehro was singing the songs directly to each fan in the audience, creating a unique concert environment that had fans captivated. It didn’t take long for mehro to express their excitement at being able to perform for their Houston fans, saying “What an absolute pleasure. What an absolute delight.”
They told fans about their short experience exploring the city as well as everything they witnessed directly outside of the venue that left a strong impression on the whole team. White Oak Music Hall has three stages and on the outdoor stage, the same day mehro was playing upstairs, the Insane Clown Posse was having their own concert. According to mehro, they witnessed a man setting his fist on fire and punching someone in the face, which mehro jokingly claimed was the same energy they expected from their own fans.
Truly, the energy at mehro’s show was incredible. Each song had its own unique lighting set up that accentuated the feelings the lyrics and music were trying to convey. In an interview with Noisescape Magazine, mehro said that if they could play any song to introduce someone to their music it would be “pirate song,” so it’s no surprise that its performance was the perfect amalgamation of every element that made mehro’s show so enthralling. The lighting danced around mehro and the band as they put on the most intense performance of the night. It was an experience that would no doubt stay in fans' minds even as they went back home.
It’s clear from listening to their music that mehro is a very eccentric artist and that becomes even more apparent when you see them perform on stage. Right before a harrowing performance of “who are you,” mehro did a series of comedic impressions, asking fans to guess who they were supposed to be. In another memorable moment, mehro asked everyone in the venue to compliment a stranger. This included mehro and the band, who leaned over the stage and complimented different fans in the audience.
Despite Weirdthrob having only just released a few days before the show, fans sang along to every song from the album. Many fans stated that hearing “Lady Parts and Mannequins” at the half•alive concert was what made them want to look into mehro after the show and it was evident in their loud reactions from the minute they heard the intro.
By far, the song that got the most reactions was mehro’s debut single, “perfume.” Evie Irie teased fans with it during her set where she told the story of when her and mehro both wrote incredible songs and couldn’t wait to play them for each other. Fans’ excitement to hearing her sing a snippet was its own teaser for their unbridled joy when they finally heard mehro sing it live. One fan even sang along so loudly that her voice was almost louder than mehro’s, making it sound almost like they were singing a duet.
Instead of leaving the stage before the encore, mehro and the members of the band all turned their backs on the audience and made everyone cheer in order for them to turn around and continue the show. Once fans were loud enough to make everyone turn around, they performed “chance with you” and “You’re So Pretty.”
Before singing their final song, mehro took the time to thank every single person in the building, from the venue staff to the audience to the tour staff. It was something mehro did at various points throughout the night, but it still left everyone going home with a warm feeling in their chest.
