REVIEW: Kile J - “Honey” Single

New York artist Kile J has released their new single “Honey” with an accompanying music video. The single is their first release of the year, and the title track of their highly anticipated 4-song EP.  The non-binary artist, originally from Houston, TX describes themselves as “dedicated to creating work that unapologetically highlights the experiences and nuances of queer people of color”

“Honey” immediately grabs the listeners attention with a soulful beat that draws on southern influences. It’s a truly unique sonic experience that one may find both unfamiliar and extremely captivating. The verses start with a mellow vocal, expressing the experience of having difficult times socially. The somber intro is quickly taken to a place of hope as we hear Kile reclaim their power and narrative, seamlessly giving way to a chorus that calls out their haters directly, with the noteworthy line, “Why you hating when you really want a taste?” This message continues to remain prominent throughout the remainder of the song.

Kile J notes of the EP, “I found strength singing words that caused me pain, over beautiful warm instrumentals.” That perfectly encapsulates this anthemic track that celebrates self-love while acknowledging struggle. The EP aims to be an impactful release for Kile J who shares “The underlying theme of the project is to tell black queer love stories authentically; not only ones about loving others, but ones about loving yourself as well.” You can listen to the full EP below!
