REVIEW: Joshu - ‘way back home’ EP

Indie-folk artist Joshu explores themes of belonging and identity in his third EP, way back home. The five-track project is shaped by his personal journey, both across the Atlantic and through questions of home and connection.

Following a breakup, Joshu traveled from southern England to his childhood home in Antigua, retracing the waters that first shaped him. Alone on the open sea, he considered whether home is defined by birthplace, upbringing, or something less tangible. That reflection forms the foundation of way back home, a collection of songs wrapped in quiet contemplation.

The title track, “way back home”, took form during his time on the water, its melody evolving with the movement of the waves. Each song in the EP carries this organic development, shaped by solitude and shifting landscapes.

The production remains understated, allowing Joshu’s vocals to weave through acoustic textures influenced by folk traditions and the gentle pulse of Caribbean rhythms. Written and self-produced in Antigua throughout 2024, the EP offers a meditation on home and identity in an ever-changing world.

For Joshu, way back home is not just a return to familiar shores, it’s an exploration of what it means to belong— to a place, to others, and to the self.
