INTERVIEW: DeathbyRomy
Genre-bending LA artist, DeathbyRomy, has been taking the alternative music scene by storm these past few years. Her last full-length release, HOLLYWOOD FOREVER, was a prime example of her versatility as an artist while also complementing her style perfectly with features from Palaye Royale & WARGASM (UK). Noisescape got the chance to sit down & discuss her latest single releases as well as her first memory of Warped Tour, now being on the festival’s lineup for a second year in a row.
How has Warped Tour been going for you so far?
So far, so good. This will be my second Warped Tour I'm playing. Last year, my first was in Orlando, and I want to say the whole team seems to be a lot more organized this year, so I'm relieved.
What is your favorite Warped Tour memory, either from this year or from attending in the past?
So last year was actually my first Warped Tour ever. I never got to go as a kid. I literally dreamed to go, but it didn't make sense for me and my family financially, so it was pretty sick for my first Warped Tour to be one that I got to play. And I loved the set last year. I loved the energy of getting to meet all the fans and getting to see what an incredible, kind of like, familial community that Warped Tour seems to attract.
Your music blends so many different genres. Do you think about genre while writing, or do you just follow what feels right for the song?
I follow what feels good. I follow what feels like the necessary path for the lyrics I've written. I'm very much a lyrics first person and, um, I just do whatever feels good and feels fun.
"BODY HORROR" touches on some difficult experiences, but there's also a strong sense of reclaiming power throughout the song. When you're writing about darker subjects, how do you balance vulnerability with empowerment?
I love that question, I found that when writing “BODY HORROR”, I had initially actually written the melody to be sung a lot softer, and I didn't think that that gave the right, like angst and energy that the lyrical content deserved. So I had actually cut that song once and then decided to cut it entirely differently. And once I delivered the chorus with a lot of angst, I felt like that gave that exact dynamic that the song deserved, you know, something that was both vulnerable and angry kind of sold in an aggressive way. You know, the aggression that the lyrics deserved.
Your music videos often feel incredibly cinematic. If you could turn any DeathbyRomy song into a full-length movie, which song would it be and what would that movie look like?
I love that question. Um, if I could turn one of my songs into a full length feature. I think I would do “Crash”. Yeah. Because I feel like “Crash” shows this like tiny window of a story that does not get elaborated on. I feel like there's so much room to like, take what happened that led up to “Crash”, like in a lot of very far trippy psychological paths. Yeah, it would be a psychological thriller for sure.
If a new listener only had time to hear one DeathbyRomy song, which song would you recommend and why?
If a new listener only had time to listen to one song. Honestly, I'd say listen to “BODY HORROR.”
If you could collaborate with any artist on this weekend's lineup, who would it be?
If I could collaborate with an artist on this weekend's lineup, it would probably be Sace6 or Grandson.
What's next for you, and is there anything fans should be especially excited about in the coming months?
I want to apologize to my US fans for not doing a US tour this year, but I promise I'll be back soon and I promise it'll be worth the wait. But what I have coming next is probably my favorite single I've ever put out. It's an anthem for the misfits, and I'm not going to give away what it is right now, but keep your eyes peeled.
