Boston Wants More of Spencer Sutherland’s Drama

Sparkling pop star Spencer Sutherland brought The Drama World Tour to Boston’s Brighton Music Hall on March 22. He embarked on his biggest headline tour to date in support of his electric new album of the same name. Sutherland adorned the stage with a set fit for a king. A grandiose throne sat atop a platform with a golden chalice and candelabra on a matching side table. A flowing curtain backdrop completed the vision and fully immersed the venue in the luxurious aesthetic of this era. Fans erupted with cheers when the lights finally dimmed. A playful British narrator began to share details about the show, noting that everything the audience would hear was live and that he hoped they would enjoy the show. Fans at the barricade recited the monologue from memory, perfectly imitating the intonations and all. The booming piano riff and first notes to the album’s fitting opening track “Welcome to the Show!” infused the venue with energy.

Sutherland emerged from backstage in an outfit pulled straight from the 70s into the modern age: a fully rhinestoned matching royal blue vest and bell bottom set with a white ruffled shirt underneath. His powerful and husky voice immediately captivated the crowd, with the singer effortlessly hitting each note while jumping around the stage. His dance moves included high kicks, spins, and plenty of audience interactions, with the star making a point to sing directly to the fans. Sutherland held the energy high throughout the rest of his set with a palpable command of the crowd. He drummed up the theatrics whenever possible by having everyone clap, sway their hands, and dance with him.
