How often can you say that the opening night of a tour felt like the last night? I can certainty say that it was the case when I headed up to Nashville to watch Volumes rock the stage at the Eastside Bowl in September.
It was my first time seeing the entire bill, which included the Nebraska-based metalcore band Catsclaw, alongside the Buffalo, New York band Until I Wake. Catsclaw warmed up the crowd for Until I Wake, who put on such a performance, you'd think it was their own headliner.
Then, Volumes took the stage to thunderous applause. If the band was nervous about the Nashville show being opening night, they certainly didn't show it. Vocalists Myke Terry and Michael Barr flowed from stage right to stage left, leaving no edge of the stage untouched as they fed off the ravenous crowd's energy. Fellow members Raad Soudani and Nick Ursich provided the soundtrack to their movements, ultimately giving legacy bands a run for their money.
They played deep cuts and crowd favorites, barely giving the Nashville crowd time to breathe or collect themselves as they moved from song to song.
Volumes left the stage without an encore, disappointing the crowd and even me. However, I couldn't blame them; they basically left everything on the stage for the crowd to greedily absorb and wish they had more of. I think more bands should take notes from them and deliver such explosive opening nights. The scene would be much better off for it.
